Compared to the original scheduled arrival time

This decides whether the airline can refuse to pay

Why does the reason matter?
Airlines don't owe compensation for a delay or cancellation caused by an "extraordinary circumstance" — genuinely external events like bad weather, security threats, or a third-party strike. A technical fault is usually NOT extraordinary, even though airlines often say otherwise: case law treats routine mechanical problems as an ordinary cost of running an airline. The airline has to prove the exemption applies, not the other way round.

    easyJet delay compensation

When easyJet has to pay for a delayed, cancelled or overbooked flight, how much, and how to claim.

easyJet is licensed in the United Kingdom (easyJet UK), Austria (easyJet Europe) or Switzerland (easyJet Switzerland), so it is covered by EU261 on flights departing an EU, EEA or Swiss airport and by UK261 on flights to or from the UK; flights into the EU from outside it are not covered. A covered flight that arrives 3 or more hours late, is cancelled at short notice or overbooked earns a fixed €250, €400 or €600 by distance (£220, £350 or £520 under UK261), unless the cause was genuinely extraordinary, such as bad weather or an air traffic control restriction. On flights over 3,500 km, a delay of 3 to 4 hours earns half.

    Questions

Does easyJet have to pay compensation for a delayed flight?
Yes, on a covered flight that reaches its final destination 3 or more hours late, unless easyJet proves the cause was extraordinary and couldn't have been avoided with all reasonable measures.
How much compensation can I get from easyJet?
A fixed amount per passenger, set by distance: €250 up to 1,500 km, €400 up to 3,500 km and €600 beyond under EU261, or £220, £350 and £520 under UK261. It doesn’t depend on the ticket price.
Is a technical problem an extraordinary circumstance?
Usually not. The EU Court of Justice has ruled that technical problems arising from normal operation of the aircraft are part of an airline’s ordinary business, so they don’t excuse it. Weather, air traffic control restrictions, security risks and strikes by outside staff can.
How do I claim from easyJet?
Write to easyJet first, through its own claim form or customer relations, with your booking reference and flight number — the calculator above can draft the letter. If it refuses or doesn't answer, escalate to the enforcement or dispute resolution body in the country of departure. Time limits depend on the country.
Does it matter which easyJet company operated my flight?
easyJet is three airlines: easyJet UK, easyJet Europe and easyJet Switzerland. Which one operated your flight is on the booking. For flights departing Europe it makes no difference; for a flight into Europe from outside, easyJet Europe and easyJet Switzerland are covered by EU261 and easyJet UK by UK261 only into the UK.
